The Blu-Link does what it’s supposed to do most of the time, but if you leave it set to the PS3 button (on) during a DVD Movie, at the end of the movie it loses it’s blutooth connection and you cannot turn the PS3 off by the remote. I’ve found that if you use the remote to start the movie and then press another accessory button (Tuner, TV, etc.) so that the blue light is not flashing all the time, then it operates the PS3 as it should. Very frustrating at first! The remote needs a “light” mode as the buttons are so small, that it is hard to see them except in good light. It controls a lot of electronics, but after learning the buttons on the other remotes, it’s hard to remember what each one does, so it is not used as much as I’d like. This would be a great remote if it was twice as big with larger buttons, and backlit. Shame on Sony for creating a need for something like this!

I was given a Blu-Link remote for Christmas and have been using it since. For me, the Blu-Link is working as expected for the most part. It took about 10 minutes to set up, only because I have a Samsung TV and there are about 30 “codes” for Samsung to try. I also set it up to control my Sony HTIB and Motorola DVR from FiOS.

One negative, the unit currently does not support the DVR function on the Motorola. I have the “multi-room” DVR and the main box is where the PS3 is. I was able to program the remote to talk to a Motorola set top box, and it works fine, but I cannot bring up the DVR function and Blu-Link does not list a Motorola DVR code. Maybe they will add it in the future.

I’ve set the remote to “push” the Sony HTIB for when I use the volume button, so no matter what other device I am controlling, volume changes the surround sound volume only. I like that feature. I can apparently do more “customizing” of it, but have no need to.

My only other negative is that I had a night where I had to keep reconnecting the remote to the PS3. For whatever reason it wouldn’t work. If I popped a battery out and popped it back in it would work. Since that night (New Years Eve), it hasn’t needed to be reconnected, so who knows what the root cause was.

Overall, it is getting the job done for watching movies on PS3 and controlling 3 other devices. It is substantially cheaper than purchasing a Harmony remote with a PS3 adapter, and I feel no desire to buy a Harmony now that I have the Blu-Link. Hopefully the New Years Eve disconnection issues don’t resurface, and eventually support for the Motorola DVR with multi-room on FiOS becomes available.

This remote works exactly as advertised. It does not have the ability to assign “macro” or device state-aware commands, so I had to use a couple of workarounds. My equipment: Samsung LCD TV, Onkyo receiver, PS3, DirecTV HD DVR. My only minor complaints:

    1) Since it can’t learn macros, you can’t assign one button to turn off two devices at once, like the DirecTV remote can turn on/off the DVR and the TV with a single button. Requires a few extra steps when turning everything on/off.
    2) My Onkyo receiver has different buttons for power on/power off, so the workaround for this is to have a weird, hard-to-remember button assignment for either the ON or OFF function, I guess.
    3) There are a few buttons missing from my DirecTV DVR remote, but nothing I use all that regularly. One minor annoyance: when searching on DirecTV by Title, you can use the number pad on the remote SMS style to quickly enter the first few letters of a program name, but the Blu-Link remote doesn’t have the letters on the number pad, making this feature difficult to use.
    4) When controlling the PS3, the PS3 device button blinks blue every few seconds. Note to manufacturers of consumer electronics: ENOUGH with the bright/flashing/blue LED lights on everything! My office is already filled with bright blinking lights on everything, I was hoping to avoid this in the living room…
    5) The D-pad on the remote has a bit of a soft-touch type of feel to the buttons. I’d describe the buttons as being a little squishy compared to the Sony remote (BTW if you have the Sony remote, this one will replace it since the PS3 only allows one Bluetooth remote to be present at a time).

But compared to the alternatives – this is a great simple solution for my problem. I can’t deal with the price/difficulty/lag times of the Harmony, and purchasing an adapter seems like a silly workaround.

The company also has the product manual posted on their web site, which is nice.

This remote was on my Christmas list because Sony doesn’t provide a remote for watching movies on the PS3. (Don’t expect to use this remote as another game controller even though it has some controller buttons.) The universal remote capability was an added bonus. I was pleased with it until it stopped working with the PS3 Slim. During the middle of the first movie I watched it suddenly wouldn’t control any PS3 functions. I found out from the manufacturer (and other reviews here) that this is a problem with the first 1,000 made which is apparently all that Amazon carries. (I think Amazon should note the Slim issue in its description.) Sony apparently changed the firmware on the PS3 Slim model making this remote inoperable. I like this remote so I am awaiting a replacement with a firmware update but I will have to pay return shipping for the old one. On the plus side this remote operates my HDTV and TiVo HD with no problems. It learns your other remote functions easliy if you want to change them. It is a little small but buttons are generally laid out well. I still find myself using my TiVo remote frequently because I’m so familiar with it but with practice this remote would function almost as well. A back light would be nice, too. All in all I was pleased with this remote but if you need PS3 Slim functionality make sure you find one with the newest firmware unless you want to pay additionally for return shipping.

I noticed few people mentioned the falashing light abeing annoying while in PS3 mode. While there are many ways to correct this, persionally I prefer the black electrical tape method. It’s a tried and true method which has proven itself in not only in the A/V field but many other areas as well, tho most common probably being automotive. (It’s been the repair for idiot lights for years).

With that in mind, I’d like to say you have no idea how happy i am to go from having to negotiate 3 remotes in order to relax a little bit, but if that were the case you wouldn’t be here and can appriciate the headache that is long gone.

    Enjoy.
